All teens are not alike. They vary greatly in their biological, cognitive, psychological, spiritual, and social development. This webinar will examine these domains of development, and how they impact how a teen might experience illness and hospitalization.

In this video learning activity, you will:

  • Gain an awareness of how teens vary across developmental domains
  • Receive information about how adolescent development impacts coping with hospitalization and illness
  • Gain an understanding of some of the myths surrounding teens
  • Acquire knowledge about was is typical development for teens

 

Presenter

Deborah B. Vilas, MS, CCLS, LMSW (Deb) is a faculty advisor and instructor in the Child Life Program at the Bank Street College of Education in New York City, where she coaches graduate students in how to provide meaningful and therapeutic play experiences for hospitalized children.

Deborah has worked with children as a child life specialist, preschool teacher, and social worker. A writer, blogger and international public speaker, Deborah has presented and taught in New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Mexico, the Palestinian Territories, Australia, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, and Brazil.

In 2016, she participated in a panel presentation about child life and technology at the United Nations.

In 2014, Deborah represented her profession and her country as a keynote speaker at the first global summit on pediatric psychosocial care in hospitals, addressing delegates from 46 countries on the importance of play for sick and injured children.

In 2019, the Association for Child Life Professionals honored her with the Distinguished Service Award. Her blog http://www.pediaplay.com reaches followers in over 90 countries.
