Immunisations-for-web

Overview

This webinar has been developed to provide Immunisation Program Nurses and other nurses administering vaccines with an update on the following topics: how vaccines work, recent changes to the Australian NIP (including information about the new vaccines and the reasons for the schedule changes), vaccinating special and at-risk populations and using the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

Relevance

Vaccination is a common activity within nursing and midwifery, and having a high rate of immunisation provides coverage for our most vulnerable populations via herd immunity. Ensuring vaccination knowledge is up-to-date helps nurses and midwives provide the best information to parents, which can impact on vaccination uptake rates.

PurposeĀ

The purpose of this learning activity is to promote understanding of vaccines and latest best practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Revise knowledge on how vaccines work
  • Be able to outline the changes to the National Immunisation Program schedule and explain why those changes have been made
  • Gain an awareness of issues to consider when vaccinating special/ at-risk populations
  • Gain an understanding of how to use the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

Who is this for?

Nurses and Midwives who would like to refresh and update their knowledge vaccinations, and gain an awareness of the changes to the National Immunisation Program Schedule.

Speaker

Meryl has maintained an interest in paediatric vaccines since first working as a research nurse with the Oxford Vaccine Group. Since then she’s developed education programs for paediatric emergency nurses on immunisation, written a best practice guideline for immunising people of refugee background and vaccinated far too many babies, children and adults to count.

Meryl currently works as a refugee health nurse in Brisbane and still finds time to participate in the yearly flu vaccine campaign.
